Comfrey

Comfrey is an amazing herb you can grow in your garden! There are so many uses. One thing that I love to make is Comfrey Salve. (see recipe below).

Comfrey can be used on the skin to reduce inflammation from sprains and broken bones. It is good for bruises, small cuts, burns, sunburns and sore muscles and dry skin. Comfrey roots and leaves contain allantoin, a substance that helps new skin cells grow, along with other substances that reduce inflammation and keep skin healthy. Comfrey is for topical use only and should not be taken internally as it can cause liver problems.

Make Comfrey Oil
  • 1. Pick comfrey leaves and hang to dry or freeze dry.
  • 2. When leaves are completely dry, crumble leaves in quart jar until ⅔ full. Poor olive oil or coconut oil over leaves. Place a lid on the jar and keep in sunny place for four to six weeks. Every day or so shake jar to mix it up.
  • 3. After six weeks, strain the oil from the leaves in a colander or use cheese cloth.
Make Comfrey Salve
  • 1. Salve recipes vary, but I like the consistency when I use a 1 to 8 ratio of oil to beeswax (by weight).
  • 2. Once the oil is strained out, you should have about 16 ounces of oil.  Next, weigh out 2 ounce of beeswax.  Using easy melting beeswax pistils makes this process easy, but you can also chop some off a large block of beeswax.
  • 3. Put the oil and beeswax in a heat-safe bowl or double boiler and gently melt it over a pot of simmering water.
  • 4. Remove from heat and  add 10 drop lavender oil, tea tree oil and vitamin D oil.
  • 5. Pour the slave into jars or salve tins, let cool. The salve will last for months (some people say years). If it starts to smell rancid, you’ll know it’s time to throw it out.
  • 6. The salve is good for bruises, small cuts, burns, sunburns and sore muscles and dry skin.
